A 12-hectare former industrial zone in Toronto had soil contaminated with lead and cadmium. Traditional remediation required removing and disposing of contaminated soil at a cost of 420 euros per cubic meter. The chosen alternative used plants to extract metals over time.

Soil scientist Katrin Orav selected willows and poplars based on their metal accumulation rates. The trees were planted in 2021. Annual soil testing shows lead concentrations decreased 34 percent by 2024. Cadmium levels dropped 41 percent in the same period.

How the Process Works

The trees absorb metals through their roots and store them in leaves and branches. Each autumn, workers harvest and incinerate the contaminated plant material. The ash gets disposed of as hazardous waste, but the volume is 95 percent smaller than excavating soil.

The site now functions as a public park while remediation continues. Some visitors question whether the trees are safe to be around. Bark and surface soil testing confirms no elevated metal levels in areas accessible to people. The project costs about one-fifth of conventional remediation and provides immediate community benefit during the cleanup process.
